pacs.008

Message Type

pacs.008.001.10

pacs.008 is the ISO 20022 interbank credit transfer message that replaces the legacy SWIFT MT103.

pacs.008 (FI to FI Customer Credit Transfer) carries a customer payment between financial institutions. It replaced MT103 under the CBPR+ migration and is the backbone of cross-border payments — every time a bank sends money on behalf of a customer to another bank, pacs.008 is the message format.

The key upgrade over MT103 is data richness: pacs.008 carries structured LEI identifiers, full unambiguous addresses, extended remittance information, and a UETR (Unique End-to-End Transaction Reference) that enables end-to-end payment tracking via SWIFT gpi.

XRP-based ODL routes work by receiving pacs.008 instructions at the sending institution, converting the value to XRP, settling on the XRPL in 3-5 seconds, then converting XRP back to the destination fiat and generating a pacs.008 confirmation at the receiving end. The ISO 20022 wrapper is preserved throughout.

Crypto Relevance

pacs.008 is the most direct evidence of XRP's institutional relevance — Ripple ODL specifically handles pacs.008 messages at both ends, meaning the XRPL is embedded inside the most common cross-border payment message in the world.
