MT103 is the SWIFT message type that has underpinned international wire transfers for decades. It carries basic payment data — sender, receiver, amount, currency, and a free-text reference field — in a character-delimited format with severe length restrictions.
The limitations of MT103 are why ISO 20022 was created: the free-text fields cannot carry structured LEI identifiers, full addresses, or rich remittance data. pacs.008 (the ISO 20022 replacement) carries the same payment instruction but with structured XML fields, unlimited data capacity, mandatory LEIs, full address blocks, and a UETR. The CBPR+ coexistence period (2022–2026) runs MT103 and pacs.008 in parallel; MT103 is retired November 2026.
