MT103
Message TypeMT103 is the legacy SWIFT free-text message used for single-customer cross-border transfers, being replaced by pacs.008 under ISO 20022 migration.
MT103 is the SWIFT message type that has underpinned international wire transfers for decades. It carries basic payment data — sender, receiver, amount, currency, and a free-text reference field — in a character-delimited format with severe length restrictions.
The limitations of MT103 are why ISO 20022 was created: the free-text fields cannot carry structured LEI identifiers, full addresses, or rich remittance data. Sanctions screening, AML checks, and invoice reconciliation all require manual intervention because MT103 data is ambiguous and unstructured.
pacs.008 (the ISO 20022 replacement) carries the same payment instruction but with structured XML fields, unlimited data capacity, mandatory LEIs, full address blocks, and a UETR. The CBPR+ coexistence period (March 2023 to November 2025) ran MT103 and pacs.008 in parallel; MT103 was retired for cross-border SWIFT payments on November 22, 2025.
Crypto Relevance
MT103 is being replaced by pacs.008 for cross-border customer payments. That is a bank-side change: Ripple describes ODL as a way to use XRP as a bridge asset, but the site could not verify message-level mapping, and the retirement of a message format does not by itself create demand for any coin.
