ODL

Crypto Protocol

ODL (On-Demand Liquidity) is Ripple's cross-border payment product that uses XRP as a real-time bridge currency to eliminate pre-funded nostro accounts.

ODL converts the sender's fiat currency into XRP, moves XRP across the XRPL in 3-5 seconds, then converts XRP into the destination fiat — all in one near-real-time operation. The key economic insight is that banks currently lock up billions of dollars in nostro accounts (pre-funded foreign currency reserves) to service cross-border payments. ODL eliminates this by using XRP as on-demand liquidity, freeing that trapped capital.

ODL has live corridors in the US-Mexico, US-Philippines, Australia-US, and Europe-Southeast Asia markets through Ripple partner institutions including MoneyGram (prior to their separation), Sentbe, and several regulated remittance providers. Volume on ODL corridors exceeded $15 billion in annualized flow by late 2024.

From an ISO 20022 perspective, ODL operates within CBPR+-compatible message flows — the corridor looks like a standard pacs.008 interbank transfer at the institutional ends. The XRP bridge is transparent to the message layer, which is precisely why it can be adopted without changing bank compliance infrastructure.

Crypto Relevance

ODL is the primary utility-demand driver for XRP — each transaction requires purchasing XRP on the source exchange and selling it on the destination exchange, creating real buy and sell pressure driven by actual payment volume.
